As first reported by Sporting News, Phoenix Racing will put Regan Smith in their car for the prestigious Daytona 500 and plans to have Regan Smith and AJ Allmendinger share driving duties during the 2013 NASCAR season.

The team said Tuesday that they plan to field a Cup car the entire season and to also field a Nationwide car for restrictor-plate events along with other selected races.

Kurt Busch drove for Phoenix Racing most of the 2012 season before ditching them near the season’s end. In his time with the under funded race team, the 2004 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion produced two top-10 finishes including a season’s best finish of third on the road course in Sonoma, California.

When Busch abandoned ships and joined forces with Furniture Row Racing as the season was dwindling down it opened the door for Regan Smith and AJ Allmendinger. Smith ran two races and posted a best finish of eighth, and Allmendinger completed four races for the team owned by James Finch while posting a best effort of 24th.

The race team is still working to put together sponsorship for the Chevy. The team is also hoping to get Kurt Busch, who won a Nationwide race for Phoenix Racing at Daytona in 2012, to drive their Nationwide Series machine.
